Season’s Greetings – December 16, 2007

Happy Holidays Dear Friends: FOGG has much to be thankful for this past year.  We thank the many of our members who wrote letters and emails and made phone calls to public office holders voicing their concerns about the impending loss of the open recreational space at the Golden Gateway Tennis & Swim Club.  Many of our members also wrote to the developer, San Francisco Waterfront Partners – led by Simon Snellgrove, and attended their neighborhood presentations.  The feedback that FOGG has received shows near unanimity against the 8 Washington Street project and a strong desire to keep the open recreational space.We owe a debt of gratitude to Senator Carole Migden in having her bill SB815 being signed into law to protect the Public Trust on Seawall Lot 351 (more on this later).  We thank those who gave money to our cause, and a special thanks to our attorney, Sue Hestor, who directed the legal efforts in keeping FOGG successful in 2007.Now, we must look towards 2008, which could be the make or break year for keeping our little piece of open recreational space free of 170 luxury condominiums, and an oversized 500 plus space underground parking garage.This proposed project is moving forward.  The San Francisco Planning Department on December 8, issued the ‘Notice of Preparation (NOP) of an Environmental Impact Report (EIR)’.  The document can be accessed by clicking on this link 8 Washington Street/Seawall Lot 351 Project Notice of Preparation (NOP).  We encourage all our supporters to read this document.  Of particular interest is the assessment of the project impact on recreation beginning on page 65.  If you are a tennis player, please pay particular attention as to what will happen.  FOGG is preparing a response to the NOP.

The developer, on December 11, made a presentation to the SF Port Commission on his plan to swap land and obtain Seawall Lot 351 so he can build one of his two condominium buildings to sit right along the Embarcadero and Washington Street.  He is asking for exclusive negotiating rights.  This flies in the face and the intent of Senator Migden’s SB815, which protects the Public Trust on that Lot. We do believe there is a legal issue in play, as it should require the approval of both the State Lands Commission and the SF Board of Supervisors.
